The city of West Branch is the county seat for Ogemaw County. It was founded in the early 1870’s when the Jackson, Lansing & Saginaw Railroad built a line to the area for the transportation of lumber. A post office was established in 1873 and the village was organized in 1885. It was reorganized as a city in 1905. West Branch has a diverse economy based on tourism, small businesses, and a variety manufacturing facilities. The downtown area has many unique restaurants and shops, many featuring Victorian era architecture.
